  • The Portland area has grown tremendously since the streetcar era. And through innovative marketing and other programs, Tri-Met has emerged as one of the best run transit systems in the country, successfully keeping up with the growth. The result is a bus system which has expanded upon the hub and spoke former streetcar system, to include new crosstown routes. Among the first new bus routes created by Tri-Met were crosstown routes on 82nd Ave., 102nd Ave., and 122nd Ave. Also added were various circulator routes making convenient connections through transit centers strategically located throughout the area. With the 1986 opening of the MAX light rail line, and subsequent extensions, the bus system further evolved, with many bus routes emerging as feeder routes, connecting with the rail line.
